What is a registered behavior technician?

A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is a paraprofessional certified by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). RBTs work under the close, ongoing supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) or a similarly qualified professional. The primary role of an RBT is to provide behavior analysis services, implementing behavior-analytic interventions that are designed by the supervising behavior analyst.

What does an RBT do?

The primary role of an RBT involves the direct implementation of behavior-analytic services designed to modify specific behaviors in their clients, particularly those with autism spectrum disorders and other developmental issues.

RBTs are trained to carry out comprehensive behavior intervention plans, collect data during therapy sessions, and interact with clients through these structured interventions. Their work is vital in ensuring consistent, supervised application of behavioral principles and techniques aimed at improving functional behaviors.

RBTs also play a crucial role in supporting the family and educational teams involved with the individual receiving therapy. They provide training on reinforcement strategies, assist in managing challenging behaviors, and ensure that interventions are executed accurately and effectively.

In addition to direct intervention, RBTs document progress and are involved in preparing reports and maintaining records that are essential for assessing client progress and adjusting interventions.

Being an RBT is challenging, but incredibly rewarding. Witnessing the breakthroughs a client makes, even small ones, is what keeps me going. It’s a privilege to support these individuals and their families on their journeys.

How to become a registered behavior technician

Eligibility Requirements

You should be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent. You also need to pass a background check, typically conducted to ensure safety in working with vulnerable populations.

Complete Training

Prospective RBTs are required to complete a 40-hour training program that covers the RBT Task List, a BACB-curated outline of necessary skills and knowledge areas. This training is designed to cover the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and must be completed within a 180-day period.

Competency Assessment

After completing the training, you must pass a competency assessment administered by a qualified Board Certified Behavior Analyst. This assessment involves direct observation of the candidate performing tasks from the RBT Task List. The assessor evaluates your ability to handle various situations and tasks that you will encounter in the role.

RBT Examination

Once the competency assessment is passed, the next step is to apply for and pass the RBT examination, which is administered by the BACB. The exam tests your knowledge of the RBT Task List and the ethical standards expected of an RBT. This multiple-choice exam is conducted at a Pearson VUE testing center.

Maintain Certification

After passing the exam, to maintain certification, RBTs must comply with ongoing supervision requirements and complete a renewal process annually, which includes continuing education and adherence to the BACB’s ethical requirements. Regular supervision by a BCBA ensures that RBTs continue to practice according to the high standards required by the BACB.

How much can you earn as a RBT?

The average salary for a Registered Behavior Technician typically ranges between $30,000 and $40,000 annually. For more insights please visit our RBT salary guide.
