A bachelor’s degree in psychology is the foundation for a wide range of psychology major jobs, yet many Psychology Majors do not actually pursue careers in psychology. Many Psychology Majors choose jobs as social workers and career counselors. Some select careers in business, working as managers and sales representatives. Still others, after earning certification, may become high school psychology teachers.


What are the Responsibilities for Someone Working in Psychology Major Jobs?

Psychology Majors study human behavior in individuals and groups, focusing on the various behaviors that affect mental health and mental function. They also study collective human behavior, analyze and treat behavior problems and disorders, and study physical and environmental factors that can affect behavior. Frequently applying new approaches to established knowledge, psychology is an ever-evolving science.  

Psychology Majors conduct research and serve as consultants in their community and in hospitals, organizations,  and universities.  They study normal and abnormal human behavior and treat both mental and emotional problems. They work with patients in varied demographics, such as business executives, athletes, students, and families. They often work with other professionals such as physicians, attorneys, educators, policymakers, and scientists and contribute to every area of society.  

Where do Professionals in Psychology Major Jobs Work?

Psychology Majors work in varied settings. They commonly work on staff at general medical and surgical hospitals and at mental-health hospitals, facilities and centers. They work at colleges and universities as professors, also seeing patients part time as well as providing consults to businesses and industries. Many Psychology Majors work in research centers where they conduct laboratory research, working with diverse populations to study human behavior at all levels of human development.

Psychology Majors work for state, local and federal government entities, such as Veteran Affairs centers and military installations. Many are on staff at local elementary and middle schools. Still others find rewarding work with law enforcement, including corrections centers and prisons. 


What Skills are Required in Psychology Major Jobs?

Psychology Majors must have strong analytical skills and be able to examine information from multiple sources and draw logical conclusions. They study human behavior and attitude so they should have observation skills enabling them to listen and watch patients to understand the meaning of their facial expressions and body language. They need strong critical thinking skills and to be able to assess the state of a patient’s mental health using evidence-based clinical practice guidelines.   

Psychology Majors should possess patience and people skills. They must work with ease with a diverse population and seek to understand various lifestyles and socio-economic situations and how they affect the mental health of their patients. 


How Much Money Can You Make in Psychology Major Jobs?

Psychology Majors’ salaries vary widely by specialty, experience and geographic location. Elementary and middle school psychologists earn a median annual income of $73,000. Those working in government earn an average salary of $93,000 and those working in mental-health practices earn annually. Psychologists working in hospitals typically earn $82,000 per year. Neuropsychologists earn $90,000 per year and clinical psychologists earn $82,000 per year. Counseling psychologists earn an average salary of $72,000 and forensic psychologists make $61,000 per year.
