Psychology Majors work in varied settings. They commonly work on staff at general medical and surgical hospitals and at mental-health hospitals, facilities and centers. They work at colleges and universities as professors, also seeing patients part time as well as providing consults to businesses and industries. Many Psychology Majors work in research centers where they conduct laboratory research, working with diverse populations to study human behavior at all levels of human development.
Psychology Majors work for state, local and federal government entities, such as Veteran Affairs centers and military installations. Many are on staff at local elementary and middle schools. Still others find rewarding work with law enforcement, including corrections centers and prisons.
What Skills are Required in Psychology Major Jobs?
Psychology Majors must have strong analytical skills and be able to examine information from multiple sources and draw logical conclusions. They study human behavior and attitude so they should have observation skills enabling them to listen and watch patients to understand the meaning of their facial expressions and body language. They need strong critical thinking skills and to be able to assess the state of a patient’s mental health using evidence-based clinical practice guidelines.
Psychology Majors should possess patience and people skills. They must work with ease with a diverse population and seek to understand various lifestyles and socio-economic situations and how they affect the mental health of their patients.
