What are the Responsibilities for Someone Working in Counseling Psychology?

Counseling Psychologists meet with clients to help them cope with problems that can arise during various life stages, such as career problems, depression and anxiety, and relationship problems. They teach patients strategies to manage stress and solve problems, helping them to adjust to life changes and to improve their relationships.  

Counseling Psychologists pay particular attention to emotional, social, educational, vocational, developmental, and health-related concerns to help clients improve their overall well-being. They teach patients techniques to alleviate stress, overcome maladjustment, resolve crises, and to better function with everyday life stresses. Counseling Psychologists give their clients tools to achieve balance when dealing with stress. 

Where do Professionals in Counseling Psychology Work?

Counseling Psychologists work in a variety of settings. They work in private practice providing individual and group patient counseling, including couples counseling. They work at substance abuse rehabilitation facilities, hospitals and other medical facilities, colleges and universities, and community centers.

Counseling Psychologists may consult with business and work groups to help improve work environments. They may also work as educators or researchers. Many work for government

agencies, providing counseling services for military members, veterans, and county or local government centers. Counseling Psychologists sometimes work for health maintenance organizations, varied rehab agencies, and mental health facilities.


What Skills are Required in Counseling Psychology?

Counseling Psychologists must be socially perceptive, being aware of clients’ reactions and understanding why they react as they do. They must engage in active listening and possess solid communication skills. They need strong research skills and the ability to work collaboratively with team members. 

Counseling Psychologists should have strong critical thinking skills and develop the ability to identify the strengths and weaknesses of their treatment plans. They must utilize complex problem solving skills, identifying and reviewing new information applicable to their clients’ problems. Counseling Psychologists must have strong knowledge of psychological theory as understanding of human behavior and performance. They must be able to engage and empathize with many personality types. 


How Much Money Can You Make in Counseling Psychology?

Counseling Psychologists earn an annual average salary of $69,000 but depending on their education level, area of interest, years of service, and location, that figure can rise significantly to an average of $96,500 per year. A Counseling Psychologist working in a physician’s office can earn up to $94,000 per year while one working in the individual and family setting can earn $86,000 per year. The industrial or organizational field offers up to $95,000 as annual salary. Counseling Psychologists working in government services earn an average annual salary of $73,000.
