Clinical Psychology Jobs

Clinical Psychology Jobs are the largest specialty within the psychology field. Clinical Psychologists work in a variety of settings, including private practices, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, clinics and schools. They assess, diagnose and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders, ranging from short-term crisis intervention to chronic conditions like schizophrenia and depression. Some Clinical Psychologists work in medical schools and universities, where they train graduate students in the field of mental health and behavioral medicine.

People in clinical psychology jobs work closely with medical doctors regarding treatment, especially when that treatment includes medication.  Typically, clinical psychologists are not licensed to prescribe medication, only medical doctors, including psychiatrists, can prescribe medication.  There are also several states that allow trained Clinical Psychologists to prescribe certain medications.

 

What are the Responsibilities for Someone Working in Clinical Psychology?

Clinical Psychologists center their attention on diagnosing and treating psychological, emotional, behavioral, and social issues that affect individuals, families, and groups. By interviewing, testing, and observing, a Clinical Psychologist evaluates existing or potential mental disorders in their clients. 

Clinical Psychologists apply psychological theories to assist patients in overcoming depression and anxiety and to better manage stress. They counsel patients with physical health concerns such as diabetes and other chronic illnesses. They also help specific groups of patients such as the elderly, children, and college students and professionals who work in fields specific to those groups.

Where do Professionals in Clinical Psychology Work?

Clinical Psychologists work in a variety of settings. Some Clinical Psychologists work in private practice providing individual and group patient counseling or independent research. Others work in team settings providing collaborative services with other professionals, such as physicians and social workers.

Clinical Psychologists work in clinics, rehabilitation facilities, hospitals, mental health centers, and community health centers. Clinical Psychologists may work as researchers, working at colleges or universities or for private research centers. Clinical Psychologists often work for government agencies, providing services for the Department of Corrections or the Federal Bureau of Prisons, VA centers, and military facilities. Others choose to work in public schools, providing services to clients from nursery school through college. 

 

What Skills are Required in Clinical Psychology?

Clinical Psychologists must possess knowledge of psychological theory and practice and have an interest in how humans think and interact with one another. They must have strong research and teamworking skills but they must also be able to work on their own. Students who pursue Clinical Psychology should have strong critical-thinking skills and have the ability to quickly identify the effectiveness of a treatment plan and then make adjustments to better benefit their clients. They must possess strong communication skills and be able to empathize with a broad range of personalities.  

 

How Much Money Can You Make in Clinical Psychology?

Clinical Psychologists earn an annual average salary of $79,000 but depending on their education level, area of interest, and location, that figure can rise significantly to an average of $110,500 per year. A Clinical Counselor or School Psychologist earns $77,000 per year. An Industrial or Organizational Psychologist can earn $120,000 per year. Clinical Psychologists working in government services earn an average annual salary of $96,000. Those who work in hospital settings typically earn $86,500 per year and those who pursue elementary and secondary school careers in either the private or public setting earn $76,000 per year.
